McGhee Tyson Airport Parking Garage
The Metropolitan Knoxville Airport board has given the green light to a $2.2 million project for the expansion of McGhee Tyson Airport’s parking garage. The project is currently underway, with plans to increase parking capacity at the airport. During the board meeting held on September 21, commissioners approved a $2.2 million contract to be awarded to a Knoxville-based civil engineering firm as part of the parking garage expansion initiative. This award is intended to be funded through a grant from the Tennessee Department of Transportation.
The expansion of the parking garage represents the initial phase of this new project. Commissioners were tasked with considering the approval of a work authorization with Gresham Smith, an engineering firm responsible for overseeing the initial phase of the project and completing 30% of the design documents.
Bryan White, the Vice President of Engineering and Planning, stated that the airport authority is prepared to award the 30% design contract for the garage expansion. This phase typically involves outlining key features and establishing a timeline for completion. Gresham Smith will be allowed to work on the project’s functional design and other aspects of the expansion. The resolution for TDOT funding was openly approved by the board, and the parking garage project is one of several ongoing construction projects currently overseen by the Metropolitan Knoxville Airport Authority (MKAA).
During the recent authority meeting, the primary focus was on the airport’s future. However, the board also took the opportunity to reflect on the Smoky Mountain Air Show, which took place at the McGhee Tyson Air National Guard base between September 10 and 11. Chairman Brian Simmons noted that airport staff effectively managed the event, even amidst unexpected heavy traffic. He began the board meeting by expressing gratitude to the staff for their efforts during the air show. Patrick Wilson mentioned that staff members were finalizing tasks related to the event, concluding with a short-term plan. In other business matters, the board approved requests for temporary construction along Louisville Proffitt Spring Roads and an additional control system.
